Thank You for Your Patience… and a Little Cow Drama

Good morning Reader!

Thank you so much for your patience while we stepped away for a bit. Our family has been doing what many of you likely crave too—catching up on overdue projects, sinking our hands into meaningful work, and finally slipping away for a little quiet trip up north.

Getting away from this farm is tough. There’s always more to do, always a hundred little reasons to stay home. But I’m so glad we made the effort.

While away we fished (Lucy caught her first northern!), Natalie and Gordon learned to clean fish like pros, and I watched my kids swim in the lake, pal around with cousins, and share stories around the campfire. And somewhere in the stillness, I remembered who I am outside the constant pull of chores and checklists. It was restorative in the simplest way.

And then—on the second-to-last day of vacation, 254 miles from home—the phone rang.

"Your cows are out on the driveway. What should I do?"

No farmer wants to hear those words when they’re almost five hours away. But God is good—our sitter stayed calm and cheerful, and together we came up with a workflow. Friends rallied to help. The cows were safely herded into the yard until I could return 5 hours later to repair the storm-damaged fence and get them back where they belonged.

Just as I breathed a sigh of relief that everyone was safely fenced in, another call came:
“Leah, do you have the Suburban keys? We can’t drive the boat home tomorrow morning without them.”

Turns out, the keys were in my pocket the whole time. Deep breath. One more mental gear shift—and back north I went for a late night drive.

Later, Gordon told someone he was surprised Mom & Dad didn’t seem upset when the cows got out or mom had to drive all the way back with the keys. But really, what would be the point of that? What a gift to show our kids that things can go sideways and we don’t have to fall apart.

Isn’t that life? We seek rest, and even in rest, the world keeps turning—imperfect, unpredictable, and often funny in hindsight.

But through all of it, I see this: the effort to rest is worth it. Even when it’s interrupted. Because time with your people—the kind where you’re just together, without the rush—is a kind of fuel no to-do list can offer.

This little adventure reminded me how grateful I am for the people around me—those who cheer us on, show up in the chaos, and understand that living fully sometimes means embracing the unexpected.

And maybe you’ve been living your own version of that lately—navigating interruptions, stretching to show up for your people, or choosing rest even when the world doesn’t slow down. The effort to reconnect, rest, and live with intention is always worth it.

We’re back now—sun-kissed, a little bug-bitten, and happy to be home - come see us :-)

Until then—may you find a bit of space to breathe this week. And if something breaks loose, may help come quickly and with a smile.

With gratitude and joy,
Leah

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.
