Sowing Seeds: Celebrating Local Foods & Lost Skills

Good morning Reader,

Thank you to everyone who came out to the cow milking demo this weekend! My favorite moment? When I opened the door to let Rosie into the barn and the whole crowd let out a collective “awww.” Her big, gentle face just melts hearts. It was such a joy to connect with curious families over a shared love of dairy cows. Creating new memories and friendships is so good—and so needed.

That’s exactly why I’m writing you today.

Summer is the season of festivals—and I want to personally invite you to something special on Sunday, July 13:
Sowing Seeds: Celebrating Local Foods & Lost Skills
Hosted at Alternative Roots Organic Farm in Madelia, MN, this is an afternoon of learning, community, and meaningful connection.

Whether you're a backyard gardener, an aspiring homesteader, or just curious about real food and traditional skills, this event was made with you in mind.

Here’s a peek at what’s in store:

  • Pop-Up Farmer's Market
  • Kid's Face painting, crafts, and games.
  • Soap making
  • Cooking with organ meats
  • Beekeeping for beginners
  • Sourdough and cast iron baking
  • Turkey processing (yes, really!)
  • Balancing homeschooling + family milk goats
  • Pottery throwing with a local artisan
  • An organic orchard tour
  • A food truck serving ice cream treats + local beef
  • And a kids’ story-time with our llama, Garth (led by my daughter Natalie, silly llama songs included)!

This is your chance to slow down, learn something new, and be surrounded by people who care about the same things you do: family, health, stewardship, and meaningful connection.

Early bird pricing ends June 30 and space is limited. Kids 12 and under are free!

Whether you’re just starting to dip your toes into self-reliant living or you’ve been raising chickens for years, this is a space to grow—and I’d love for you to be there.

Grab your tickets here (or reply and I’ll get you the info!)

All the best,
Leah

P.S. Back when we lived in town, I still felt like a homesteader at heart. These skills belong to everyone. Come join me—or share this with a friend who would enjoy it too!
